Cautions: The effects of aspirin on liver are dose-dependent. The maximum recommended dose is 1g/day.
Antacids are useful in patients at risk of bleeding (eg, in the setting of systemic lupus erythematosus, severe renal failure, or pregnancy).
Other precautions for the use of aspirin include:
- In patients who are at risk for bleeding, avoid the use of aspirin for at least 6 hours prior to surgery
- Do not give aspirin to patients who are receiving other agents that increase blood clotting such as corticosteroids, warfarin, warfarin-related anticoagulants, aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
- Do not use aspirin more than once per day in patients with known or suspected gastrointestinal bleeding (eg, in patients with severe intestinal ulcerations or perforation, in patients treated with aspirin-containing products)
- Avoid aspirin in patients given anticoagulants because they may decrease aspirin absorption by increasing the amount of a drug Orlistat weight loss pills that is metabolized by the liver.
- Do not use aspirin if the patient has liver disease
- Do not take aspirin if the patient is pregnant, plan to become or breast-feeding for any reason
- Do not take aspirin if the patient is receiving treatment for severe diarrhea, anorexia nervosa, or is taking a large dose of aspirin.
- Do not use aspirin if the patient has any of these conditions:
- hepatic encephalopathy
- hepatic dysfunction
- diabetes mellitus
- malignancy
- severe pulmonary fibrosis
- cirrhosis
- severe renal failure
- severe bleeding after a pulmonary embolism or stroke
- recent or ongoing chemotherapy
- recent or ongoing bone marrow stem cell transplant
- recent or ongoing radiation therapy
- recent or ongoing other immunosuppressive therapy
- recent (less than 6 months) or ongoing (six months longer) use of corticosteroids
- recent use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including aspirin
- recent use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs within six months of the patient giving birth or within six months of surgery
